Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, cancers and mental health disorders are a major cause of premature adult death and account for approximately 68% of the total burden of disease globally. The Middle East is facing a growing epidemic of NCDs, including some of the highest rates of obesity and diabetes found in the world, caused by rapid demographic and epidemiological transitions with changes in environmental factors (e.g. lifestyle, unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, smoking, urbanization, etc.) This talk examines the rising tide of NCDs in the region and highlights both challenges and opportunities unique to the region for stemming the epidemic.
