Based on early modern Qur'an translations and other textual witnesses, this talk explores roles that the Qur'an has played in debates between Christians of different persuasions and in central epistemological reconfigurations that are at the basis of modernity in Europe. It presents first results of the collaborative research project The European Qur'an. Islamic Scripture in European Religion and Culture, which was developed with the support of the NYU Abu Dhabi Institute and the Humanities Research Fellowship Program and has attracted a synergy grant award of €10 Mio from the European Research Council.
