Biologist, filmmaker, and TED Fellow Alexis Gambis discusses his second feature Son of Monarchs currently in post-production. This butterfly-centered drama merges topics of evolutionary biology with broader issues of immigration, politics, and rituals. Gambis provides glimpses into the research and filmmaking process, from the research labs in New York to the butterfly sanctuaries in Mexico, discusses why his science films are often told through animal perspectives, and highlights the importance of taking scientific data outside of the lab so it can serve drama and fiction.
