Open to the Public

All the Things We Carry features photogravures of Sama Alshaibi as artist, subject, and Arab woman. The portraits, marked by objects transformed into sculptural headdresses, challenge clichéd representations of Middle Eastern women established through Orientalist photography from the 19th and 20th centuries. By using the labor-intensive photogravure printing process patented in the 1850s, Alshaibi references photography’s role in creating a dominant narrative of how Arab women are seen while offering a restorative and expanded vision of their identities.

Sama Alshaibi is a multimedia artist whose work has been featured in over 20 national and international solo exhibitions as well as several prominent biennials.  She is Professor of Photography, Video and Imaging at the University of Arizona, Tucson

Sama Alshaibi: All the Things We Carry is curated by Grace Aneiza Ali, Assistant Professor and Provost Fellow, Art & Public Policy, Tisch School of the Arts, NYU.
