How does the life of a dhow captain sailing in the 1920s allow us to think about connected histories of the Gulf and Indian Ocean? What kind of reading, writing, and thinking about space do we see in the writings by Gulf nakhodas? Today, Gulf ports continue to be hubs for mechanized dhows from western India. How do dhow crews move across the Gulf and Indian Ocean, becoming intermediaries in global shipping today? What does immobility and mobility look like from the deck of a modern dhow?
