Jonathan Haidt lays out the basic thesis of his recent book, The Anxious Generation, which focuses on the mysterious and sudden decline of adolescent mental health that began in many (but not all) countries in the early 2010s. The harms of a "phone based childhood" go well beyond mental health. They include declines in educational outcomes, social skills, and daydreaming and creativity, all of which portends problems for economies and democratic societies.
