There has been a remarkable transformation of the natural product landscape over the past several decades as a result of advances in metabolomics, next-generation sequencing technologies, powerful data mining tools, and biocatalysis. These technologies have contributed to a surge in the discovery of novel biosynthetic gene clusters and natural products. Despite the potential of this untapped reservoir of natural products to provide important new therapeutic agents and chemical tools, the process of harnessing the encoded metabolites remains a challenge. This symposium seeks to bring together scientists from diverse backgrounds to address the central methodological and technical hurdles impeding the discovery, functional elucidation and clinical translation of complex natural products for health applications.
