We are all intuitively familiar with domestic plants and animals. We understand a great deal less about the origins and evolutionary history of domestication, and the stories we tell ourselves about the emergence of domestic species tend to be simple and linear, when the reality is not so much. This talk explores the histories of a number of domestic animals and demonstrates how their long-term relationships with people are both more complex and more interesting than we tend to appreciate.
