Research on inequalities by class, race, or gender is central to contemporary Sociology. The prominence of the sociology of culture has also grown in recent decades. But there has been limited dialogue between these subfields because they often differ in methods (quantitative versus qualitative), and using groups’ cultures to explain their unequal outcomes typically evokes criticism that social structure was ignored. The 3 NYUs have excellent researchers working on both topics with diverse methods. This workshop promotes dialogue across the 3 NYUs, across users of qualitative and quantitative methods, and across researchers in the subfields of Inequality and Culture.
