Nangiar Koothu is a 1,500-year-old solo theatre tradition from Kerala, closely linked to Sanskrit drama. Performed by a single female artist, it brings stories to life through powerful expressions, gestures, and narration. This performance retells the legend of Emperor Aśoka, tracing his journey from violent conqueror to enlightened seeker. Moving between different characters—a king, a mother, a monk, and more—the performer offers a window into themes of power, transformation, and the value of life. The artist will join Abhishek Majumdar in a conversation on how this ancient form speaks to contemporary audiences. Speakers
