This introductory workshop offers participants a dynamic entry point into Kalaripayattu, the ancient martial art form from Kerala known for its fluid strength, animal-inspired forms, and deep connection between body and breath. The session will explore foundational practices including animal poses (Vadivukal), basic kicks (Kallukal), traditional salutations (Vandamanam), and a mixed movement sequence.
Open to beginner and intermediate movers, the workshop welcomes traditional and contemporary dance artists, theater practitioners, martial artists, and anyone interested in expanding their movement vocabulary through embodied practice. Suitable for participants 16 years and older, with some form of dance experience.
Pathum Dharmarathna
Pathum Dharmarathna is a choreographer, movement artist and fitness trainer based in Sri Lanka with a robust background in Sri Lankan traditional dance, contemporary dance, martial arts and yoga. With a Bachelor of Arts (Special) Degree in Theatre and Performing Arts from the University of Visual and Performing Arts, Colombo, his physical training was nourished further at the Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts, Bangalore. Having completed a certificate course in Fitness Training at the Sri Lanka Foundation, he has honed multidisciplinary skills and is currently pursuing his artistic journey as a freelance artist exploring human existence. Pathum also serves as a choreographer and ensemble trainer at Stages Theatre Group, Sri Lanka
