Music Workshop

Folk music of the Shahirs of India with Yalgaar Sanskrutik Manch

From Kavan

Tue, Feb 10 @ 6:30pm, 2026

The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi

The Shahirs are Ambedkarite poets whose songs, known as Kavan, carry powerful messages of equality, equity, and social justice. For centuries, their music has blended traditional folk melodies with modern thought, inspiring dialogue around peace, harmony, and human rights.

In this workshop, participants experience the rich tradition of Shahiri music by listening to selected songs, learning to sing together, and engaging in a discussion about its themes and meanings. The session also invites participants to explore parallels between Shahiri music and similar traditions within their own cultural contexts, fostering a deeper understanding of music as a tool for social transformation.

This workshop is suitable for participants aged 18+.

Yalgaar Sanskrutik Manch

Yalgaar Sanskrutik Manch was formed in 2015, inspired by Babasaheb Ambedkar’s vision of cultural reform preceding political change. Rooted in progressive movements across Maharashtra, the group uses Ambedkari Shahiri Jalsa to address caste based social oppression in marginalized communities. Yalgaar unites artists and activists on a common platform to strengthen cultural activism, and promotes a culture of non-violence, democracy, and humanism. Their plays blend storytelling, poetry, song, satire, improvisation, Babasaheb’s speeches, and collective lived experiences of the members. Active across Maharashtra and beyond, they aim to empower marginalized voices, promote inclusivity, and inspire change through art and collaboration. Kavan is their first foray into proscenium theater.
